Picture: February 1981, Jim Miller
This 40'x55' fieldstone mill utilized 3.5 stories in the grinding of grist. It was active as a grain mill and flour mill during its years of operation. Water from the dam on the left of the mill, fed by Furnace Creek, flowed through a foot diameter pipe into the mill. The Oley Furnace Mansion is on the right where General Daniel Udree resided at the time of mill construction. The furnace supplied ammunition for Washington's Continental Army.
When photo was taken in February 1981, it looked as though the building might be converted into apartments, but as late as 1992, this had not happened and the building looked to be deteriorating rapidly. Since then, a picture viewed on the web showed a greatly improved condition. Hopefully this renovation or restoration will continue. There is very little remaining of the furnace portion of the complex.
Update: I believe the current owner has placed the mill up for sale. Apparently the property directly across the road is owned by the same person and his desire was to sell that piece off and concentrate his renovation process on the mill itself. The township? has refused to allow the property to be split. Bruce Weiss 12/17/2005*
| Directions:
Take Main Street north from town of Oley for 1 mile, turn right onto Furnace Rd., go 1 mile, then turn right on Spook La. or Reider Rd. The mill is on the left. Just on the left side of the mill is the mill pond, then an intersection with Hill Rd. You are now at the Oley Furnace Complex. |
