The first county seat , old Rockbridge, was burned during the Civil War. A village grew up here around the earlier grist mill built in 1868. The mill was rebuilt and enlarged by B. V. Morris in 1888. Morris also built a general store in 1894 and a bank was founded in 1903 by John Edwards.

The bank closed in the aftermath of the Great Depression and the mill ceased operating in the late 1940's. The area around the mill was appropriated in 1954 by the Amyx family. They deveoped it into a resort, including a general store, restaurant, old Post Office, cabins, and the old bank building called the Rainbow Trout & Game Ranch.
