Paydown Mill is a 20'X 45'frame mill 2.5 stories in stature. A foundation of limestone rounds out the external features made very photogenic by the fact that the siding is naturally weathered board.
By 1990, the equipment had been removed and the mill had been converted into a residence. The turbine and mill race were intact in the 1990's. In 2004, it did not look as though it was being lived in.
Roadside sheds and small stone building which was former slave quarters are located on the opposite side of Mo 42.
The mill is located on a branch of Mill Creek, which in turn flows into the Gasconade River about 3000 feet downstream.
| Directions:
Ten miles from US 63 northeast of Vienna on Mo 42. The mill is on the left side of Mo 42, near the road about 1000 feet west of Mill Creek bridge. Several farm houses are on the uphill side of the road. |
