The waterwheel seems to be the best preserved part of the mill. It appears to be constructed of metal and of the Fitz design genre.
This view is from the Sh 630. It would not even appear to have been a mill from this vantagepoint. Mr. Beal has a friend who owns adjacent property. The mill property owners, Mr & Mrs. William Lohr, have various pulleys and shafts from the mill. The mill was fed from the waters of a tributary of Jacks Creek that feeds through Jones Mill Pond.
A close up of the Sh 630 side of the mill showing the brick foundation/first story level. This, as all the area, is quite brushy and grown up as atested to by the previous photo. A better time for pictures would be in the winter season.
This image shows the wooden driving pulley, inside the exterior wall, that is on the same shaft as the waterwheel that is just on the outer side of the mill. This is on the lowest level of what was three stories including this basement level.

From Bowling Green, Va., which is about 20 miles south of Fredericksburg via Va 2, continue south for 3 miles on US 301/Va 2 bearing left on Sh 721. Go about 7 miles east to Sparta. The mill is about 1 mile east of Sparta on Sh 630 at the outlet to Jones Mill Pond. |
