The west wall of a grist/flour mill built along the S. Grand River probably about 1850. This photo looks south along the existing wall ruins to 307th St. The wall is about 2' wide and 9' tall from the bottom of the arch to the top.

The wall, looking towards the east depicts the stones about 2' wide, 1'-3' long, and 10"-12" thick sandstone. Notice the cemented closed outlet arch at the bottom of the wall.

A piece of steel pipe (penstock) that supplied water from the then S. Grand River into the mill structure, laying near where the east wall of the mill would have been.

The west wall of the mill from the opposite side of picture #2 looking WNW across the fertile fields. The mill either was a victim of the upheavals that occurred in Cass County during the Civil War, when Quantrill Raiders and other such renagade groups were raining terror and bloodshed across a large section of westcental Missouri and eastern Kansas; burned from accidental causes; or simply deteriorated after the water supply was exhausted by the new channel of the S. Grand River. More info is needed here. Anyone with info about this mill, if it was a mill are urged to submit additional info, see the bottom of this page.

Close up of the outlet arch from what would be the inside of the mill foundations. The southern wall comes off the western wall to the left of the photo and parallels 307th St. about 4' off the road edge and about 2' below the road surface level for about 25 feet.

An overall view of the mill ruins area with the woods and Old Channel of the S. Grand River behind. The channel was far from being dry, as recent rains had contributed to its filling. A large culvert carries the channel across the road, where a small impounded area was evident. The old channel provides flood relief in times of heavy rain. Most all the creeks in this section of Missouri have deeply gouged, steep banks, calling to mind the sometimes violent storms and flash flooding to which the area is prone.
| Directions:
About 7 miles south of Harrisonville, Mo. on US 71, turn right onto 307th St. Go west for about 4.5 miles, just .05 miles west of State Route DD. The mill is on the right side of 307th St. just after a right /left |
